Double eyelid surgery is a specific type of upper eyelid surgery that aims to create double eyelids. Majority of Asians are born with single eyelids which are commonly due to the absence of a fibrous ligament connecting the tarsal plate to the eyelid skin.
There are several methods to create double eyelids. The methods can be divided into non-incisional and incisional methods. The suture technique is by far the most common and popular non-incisional method to create a ‘double eyelid crease’, by the insertion of a suture. Small incision and blephaloplasty surgeries are the common incisional methods used to create a ‘double eyelid crease’, which can correct droopy eyelids and enhance the eye appearance at the same time. Both non-incisional and incisional methods can be done on an outpatient basis under local anaesthesia.
Eyelid surgery should be performed by a qualified oculoplastic or plastic surgeon experienced in this type of procedure. During consultation, you should discuss about your preferred method of surgery, type of anaesthesia, your expectation of the surgery, the potential risks of surgery as well as post-operative care.
