BlephEx

What is BlephEx treatment?

BlephEx is a safe and effective in-office procedure designed to clean and exfoliate the edge of the eyelids, specifically targeting the area where bacterial biofilm, excess bacteria, and bacterial toxins tend to accumulate. This accumulation can lead to various eyelid symptoms, such as itching, redness, irritation, and dryness.

By addressing these underlying causes, BlephEx helps maintain clean and healthy eyelids. During the BlephEx treatment, the doctor will use a medical-grade handheld device that gently and precisely exfoliates the base of the eyelashes and the eyelid margins. This exfoliation process effectively removes the accumulated debris, biofilm, and bacterial toxins from the eyelids, providing relief from symptoms associated with conditions like blepharitis and dry eye syndrome.

Step-by-step procedure

  1. Preparation
Preparation which typically involves cleaning the area around your eyes and applying a mild anaesthetic eye drop to ensure your comfort throughout the treatment.
  2. BlephEx device
Your eye care professional will use the BlephEx device, which has a spinning soft micro-sponge tip. This specialised tip is carefully placed on the eyelid margin, allowing for precise exfoliation.
  3. Gentle exfoliation
The BlephEx device is activated, and the spinning micro-sponge tip gently exfoliates the base of the eyelashes and the tear glands. This process effectively removes bacteria biofilm and debris, promoting clean and healthy eyelids.
  4. Comfortable experience
The BlephEx procedure is painless and well-tolerated by most patients. Some may experience a tickling sensation or mild pressure during the exfoliation process.
  5. Post-procedure care
After the procedure, your eye care professional may provide you with instructions on post-procedure care, such as avoiding eye rubbing and following a recommended eyelid hygiene routine.

Who can use Blephasteam?

Blephasteam can be safely used by adults (including pregnant and breastfeeding women) and children from 3 years old (with the presence of a parent or carer).

How does Blephasteam work?

Blephasteam safely and effectively warms the eyelids to restore the flow of oil (meibum) from the meibomian glands. The heat and moisture provided by Blephasteam typically above 40 Degrees Celsius melt the secretions that block the meibomian glands in case of MGD, making it easier to remove the secretions using massage and pressure of the eyelids.

This specific temperature range is chosen because it is effective for liquefying the meibum (the oily secretion from the Meibomian glands) without causing discomfort or damage to the delicate skin of the eyelids or the eye itself. Blephasteam reproduces an environment that naturally enhances tear film quality and stability by reinforcing the thickness of the tear film lipid layer, that improves the eye surface health and daily comfort.
